Abe
At 8 years old Abe should be settled into his forever home, instead he ended up at Indianapolis Animal Care & Control as a stray. So we immediately pulled this elderbull. Abe lives with two small dogs and would fit into a multi-dog household or could live alone.
Due to his condition when we rescued him, we believe Abe lived his life before us as a chained outside dog. Why? Because he was underweight, nearly bald from a flea allergy (but the cold weather doesn't bother him) and sounds like a dog that has been surgically de-barked. Abe has improved so much already in our rescue and has so far to go!
Abe is still a little underweight, so we're changing his food to a venison diet. His hair is starting to come back after rounds of steroids and medications to treat his flea allergy, but it will still be months before he has a full coat. We don't know if his bark will ever be 'normal', instead he has a hoarse/muffled sounding bark.
We urge you to consider opening your home to an elderbull. Yes, you will have less time with them because they are already seniors, but don't we all want someone to comfort us when we get old?
May 2017 - It is with a heavy heart that we share Abe passed away from natural causes in his forever home. He spent his final day checking off a bucket list that included cheeseburgers, pup cups and car rides. He was in the arms of those that loved him when he passed.
