Understanding The Link® Between Animal Abuse
and Family Violence
What Is The Link?
A correlation between animal abuse, family
violence and other forms of community violence
has been established. Child and animal
protection professionals have recognized this
link, noting that abuse of both children and
animals is connected in a self-perpetuating
cycle of violence. When animals in a home are
abused or neglected, it is a warning sign that
others in the household may not be safe. In
addition, children who witness animal abuse are
at a greater risk of becoming abusers
themselves.
How Serious Is It?
A survey of pet-owning families with
substantiated child abuse and neglect found that
animals were abused in 88 percent of homes where
child physical abuse was present (DeViney,
Dickert, & Lockwood, 1983). A study of women
seeking shelter at a safe house showed that 71
percent of those having pets affirmed that their
partner had threatened, hurt or killed their
companion animals, and 32 percent of mothers
reported that their children had hurt or killed
their pets (Ascione, 1998). Still another study
showed that violent offenders incarcerated in a
maximumsecurity prison were significantly more
likely than nonviolent offenders to have
committed childhood acts of cruelty toward pets
(Merz-Perez, Heide, & Silverman, 2001). [Read

Casa Del Toro
recognizes the strain of overpopulation that is
upon Animal Control/Shelters every day, keeping
up with housing up to and over 500 animals a day
in some facilities can be very stressful on
staff and the animals, some days you just shake
your head in disbelief of the sheer numbers of
animals that pass through the doors each day.
When the kennels are cleaned and
the dogs are fed, It just doesn't seem like enough, Its hard to
walk by the dog that has been there pending a court case for
weeks on end just spinning in his kennel, or the dog that has
retreated so far into himself that the once jovial face that use
to meet you at the kennel has now given up hope that this is
what his life has become.
These dogs get passed by not
because they are bad dogs, but only because they are there for
the long haul ,These are the dogs that we are dedicated to help
improve the quality of life for, through volunteer efforts we
will keep these animals engaged and will call them by name, we
will pet them and walk them if we can, for those who may not be
able to come out of their cages, we will talk to them, read to
them , whatever it takes to give them the quality of life they
deserve while they wait for their futures to be determined.
While we fully realize that all
of these dogs may not be adoptable, We are asking for the
Quality of Life " to be taken into higher account for
these animals.
